Lanterman’s Mill Painting - Summertime!

Lanterman's Mill Painting. It was a hot and windy day late last summer when I found a shady spot to sit and create the initial sketch and establish the colors for this painting. I continued to work on it on and off in between other paintings I switched to keep it fresh. It was important to take my time and put my heart into it until I could finally call it finished. Lanterman's Mill has always been a special place to me to visit. It keeps calling me back each season and after heavy rains to see, smell, and listen to the roar of the falls that make it so special. Its just a bike ride away and I like to stop on the bridge that overlooks it, send off a prayer of thanks, take a few photos, a drink of water, and then complete the 10 mile loop back home. This is my second painting of Lanterman's Mill that I'm adding to my Mill Creek Park themed collection I hope to one day invite the public to see... hopefully in Fellows Riverside Garden's Weller Gallery. Holy Cow

HOLY COW - 9 x 12 Oil Painting

I've loved cows since childhood when I had the privilege of seeing them up close at a family friend's diary farm. I also look for them each Labor Day weekend at the Canfield Fair. I like learning fun facts about them. I thinks its funny some people don't realize all cows are female. Cows have their own stall and will "moooooo" others out who try to take it over. I am amazed I can walk up close to them to take their photo without worrying they'll attack me. Don't try it though - in case they were letting me close so I could paint their portrait! lol I just love their facial expressions and I enjoyed using larger brush strokes and bright colors to permanently capture the beauty of this cow on canvas!

Busy Egret Nesting – Today Egrets can be seen throughout most of the United States and yet they were unknown in North America prior to 1952. They actually crossed over the border from South America after originally spreading from Africa in the late 1800's. I painted this 18 x 24 painting in oils on canvas. #bethbasistapaintings.com, #audubon.org, #egret, #impressionist, #oilpainting , #Florida

Lori’s Teddy

Just finished this 8x10 watercolor painting I named "Lori's Teddy" that I hope will be a nice surprise for my friend Lori who's dog Teddy recently crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. Teddy knew he "hit the jackpot" having Lori as his Mommy and enjoyed a long life in his beautiful Colorado home complete with a doggie spa he shared with his siblings! I know you're going to cry Lori, but I hope this painting of Teddy will turn tears into permanently treasured memories. "Lori's Teddy" will be in the mail arriving home soon! #pets #bethbasistapaintings #portraits

Update: I’m so happy to share the news that my “Holy Cow” painting won the top painting award called “The Margaret Evans Memorial Award”! When I saw the little gold sticker next to my painting I thought that was the prize until I saw the amount of the cash award listed in the program…. All I can say is “Holy Cow”!!! And thank you YWCA for this opportunity!

So happy my 3 submissions to the 40th Annual YWCA Women’s Art show were accepted. More details about the show to come soon. #cowpainting, #impressionismwas , #ibispaint_gallery_challenge, #pleinairpainting, #paintings, Beth Basista paintings

The Pioneer Pavilion –11x14 Watercolor by Beth Basista

I painted most of this watercolor painting of The Pioneer Pavilion en plein air (on location) a few days ago in Mill Creek Park and finished it today. One of the oldest structures in Youngstown, in 1821 The Pioneer Pavilion was beautifully constructed from hand cut sandstone and was a mill for carding and fulling wool. In the 1830s it was converted to a storage facility for the nearby Mill Creek Furnace and later served as a cattle barn. In 1893 Volney Rogers purchased the property to expand Mill Creek Park and turned it into a dining and dancing facility, naming it Pioneer Pavilion. Since then area residents continue to enjoy social events in this historic landmark.

I never saw it documented anywhere but if you go through the cave-like addition at left, look for a carving of a child's face. I was told it was created by one of the stonemasons in the image of his son. To order a print of this painting, go to BethBasista.pixels.com

“A shady hike along the gorge”. This is my newest Mill Creek Park-themed painting of a favorite path I love to hike. I painted this one using watercolors on 9x12 yupo paper. Did you know Mill Creek Park is unique for providing hikers opportunity to walk in the shade plus enjoy seeing a variety of water features along 90% of its many trails? Whether a lake stream or one of 6 waterfalls, I’m so thankful to live so close to The Mill Creek Metro Parks in Youngstown, Ohio.

Christmas at Lanterman’s Mill - Acrylics

I'd love your opinion. Please vote:

1. Keep as is with only the wreaths in color

2. Add more color overall

3. Your suggestion:

I typically paint in vivid contrasting colors - but for this snow scene I decided to paint in the values before adding in the color. While working on it a few people told me they like it the way it is but others said they prefer to see me add more color. So I decided it put it to a vote to see which way wins. “Brake” at the Beach on Captiva Island - Before Hurricane Ian

I am so sad recalling bike riding Sanibel-Captiva Road and stopping to capture pictures of the beautiful paths, like this one, leading to the beach. On Sept. 23, 2022 Hurricane Ian's 150mph wind gusts and a 12ft storm surge decimated the barrier islands in Lee County, FL. including both Captiva and Sanibel Islands. At the time of this writing, countless workers and volunteers continue to pick up mountains of debris while others are rebuilding the infrastructure. I can only imagine how long it will take to rebuild the paradise they once was. Praying for lives lost and the thousands of residents and businesses whose insurance coverage may not be enough to cover the tear down and rebuild. This watercolor painting along with others I've painted of scenes and wildlife in this area preserve memories of what once was & what will be back again....

“Cold Feet” - Watercolors on Yupo

I asked friends on Facebook to name this painting. Although there were lots of good names to choose from. I chose Steve Tepsick’s “Cold Feet” as one that fit this perfectly and definitely made me laugh out loud. Thanks Steve!

Make like fall and “leaf”!

Started this oil painting en plein air at The Lily Pond at Mill Creek Park and finally got around to adding the final touches. The goal is to get closer to finishing paintings on site in the future.
